Build Your Career Through the Associate Program

Aspiring PGA of America Members must complete this self-paced program while working full-time at a golf facility. The program consists of a Qualifying Level (to enter the Associate Program) then three Levels (1, 2, and 3), each comprised of online coursework, faculty-led seminars, and portfolio assignments. Individuals in the program are referred to as Associates.

Pass Qualifying Level Courses

Review four Qualifying Level online courses and complete accompanying quizzes.

Take the Playing Ability Test (PAT)

Complete two rounds of golf (36 holes), shooting equal to or lower than the course rating for 36 holes plus 15. PATs are formally administered by PGA Sections.

Complete the Background Check

All individuals registering or re-registering as an Associate must complete a Background Check.

Verify Eligible Employment
Must be employed in an eligible position within one of the approved classifications.

Not Working In Golf Yet?

Affiliates are individuals who are not eligibly working as golf professionals and do not meet Associate eligibility, but may proceed through the Qualifying Level and Level 1 only of the PGM Associate Program. Affiliates must then meet all Associate eligibility to register as an Associate in Level 2 to progress toward PGA of America Membership.

How long does this take?
One of the many benefits of the PGM Associate Program is its self-paced nature. While the program does have various deadlines to help you stay on track, you have the flexibility to complete it within up to 9 years if necessary. If you're eager to fast-track your journey towards gaining PGA of America Membership, it's even possible to complete the program in just ten months*.
The average time to complete the Qualifying Level requirements to register into the Associate Program is 31 days. The average time to complete the Associate Program from starting Level 1 to getting elected into PGA Membership is 4 years.
Your pace, your choice.
A total of 28 work experience credits must be earned in addition to fulfilling the PGA PGM Program. (One credit per month while eligibly employed full time.) 12 credits are awarded for a four year college degree and six credits for a two year college degree.
*An individual can enter the PGM Associate Program with six pre-registration credits (6 months of eligible employment before registering), so with 12 credits for a four year degree, someone needs to work only ten months post-Associate registration, provided all the education can be completed.

There is no order, the Qualifying Level requirements can be completed in any way that you want! Some people complete the PAT requirement first, whether they are able to submit an event or their handicap to get started, whereas others may start on the qualifying level courses right away. Think of the qualifying level as a checklist, compared to step-by-step directions.
To be elected to membership once admitted to the PGM Associate Program, Associates will have to meet the appropriate milestones and requirements. The program consists of a series of levels with online coursework, seminars (online and in-person), and assignments.
