Tony Romo to play in PGA Tour event on sponsor's exemption

Tony Romo loves his golf. He's taken part in U.S. Open qualifiers three times before.

 

Next month, the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current CBS Football color man will play in the PGA Tour's Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship, March 22-25, in the Dominican Republic thanks to a sponsor's exemption.

 

The tournament is played opposite the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in Austin.

Until 2018, the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship was a tournament on the Web.com Tour for the last two years.

 

Romo, 37, is a +0.3 handicap.

 

"As a professional athlete, the love and thrill of competition never entirely leaves you," Romo said in a statement. "Outside of my family and football, golf is one of my greatest passions. So, playing and competing in a PGA Tour event is a dream come true. I am grateful to the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship for giving me an incredible opportunity to test my skills against some of the best on Tour."

 

Most recently, Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry competed in the Web.com Tour's Ellie Mae Classic last August. He missed the cut with back-to-back rounds of 74, but tied the second-lowest 36-hole total score by an athlete from another sport in a Web.com Tour event.
