Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson planning $10 million rivalry event

Tiger Woods vs. Phil Mickelson for $10 million dollars. Coming to a TV near you... soon.

According to Alan Shipnuck of Golf.com, the 18-hole match-play event was aimed for primetime on July 3, but negotiations between TV networks, sponsors, and the parties couldn't be completed in time. But rest assured, the showdown is coming.

The seeds of this faceoff have been growing since Phil and Tiger were both promising young stars in the '90s, but the event didn't seem likely until this year, at the Players, when the two were paired for the first two rounds, and Phil had this to say:

"The excitement that's been going on around here, it gets me thinking: Why don't we just bypass all the ancillary stuff of a tournament and just go head-to-head and just have kind of a high-stakes, winner-take-all match. Now, I don't know if he wants a piece of me, but I just think it would be something that would be really fun for us to do, and I think there would be a lot of interest in it if we just went straight to the final round."

The event may even be the start of a series. One that sees mulltiple showdowns between the two headliners, or even has them pair up to take on other challengers, according to Shipnuck.

And don't think that just because the event has no well-established trophy or colored jacket on the line that it will be a low-pressure event.

"It's a ridiculous amount of money," Mickelson said, according to Shipnuck. "No matter how much money you have, this amount will take both of us out of our comfort zone."
