Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy among players closest to career grand slam

Only five players in PGA Tour history have won all four majors to complete the career grand slam. But several other golfers, including some of the biggest names in the sport, could soon add their names to that exclusive club of Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Ben Hogan, Gary Player and Gene Sarazen.

Here's a look at the active players who are closest to completing the career grand slam and when they could do it.

Jordan Spieth

Major championships: 3 – Masters (2015), U.S. Open (2015), The Open Championship (2017)

Major needed for career grand slam: PGA Championship

When he could complete the career grand slam: PGA Championship at Bellerive Country Club from Aug. 9-12, 2018

With a breakout 2015 season on the PGA Tour, Jordan Spieth climbed halfway to completing the career grand slam, winning the Masters and U.S. Open, and he nearly finished the year with three majors as he finished as the runner-up in the 2015 PGA Championship – the one major he hasn't won.

Spieth won The Open Championship last July by three strokes, giving him three majors in as many years. He'll try to complete the career grand slam in August at St. Louis' Bellerive Country Club, where the PGA Championship is being held.

Rory McIlroy

Major championships: 4 – U.S. Open (2011), PGA Championship (2012, 2014), The Open Championship (2014)

Major needed for career grand slam: Masters

When he could complete the career grand slam: Masters at Augusta National Golf Club from April 11-14, 2019

Rory McIlroy won four majors in four years but it's been as many years since his last victory in a major championship. McIlroy will have to wait until next April to get the chance to complete the career grand slam by winning the Masters. He has earned a top-10 finish at Augusta National in each of the last four years – T-7th, T-10th, 4th and T-8th – after placing outside the top 10 in his first five starts at the Masters.

Phil Mickelson

Major championships: 5 – Masters (2004, 2006, 2010), PGA Championship (2005), The Open Championship (2013)

Major needed for career grand slam: U.S. Open

When he could complete the career grand slam: U.S. Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links from June 13-16, 2019

Lefty has six second-place finishes at the U.S. Open as he chases the elusive career grand slam. The three-time Masters champion completed the third leg in his pursuit of the grand slam in 2013, when he won The Open Championship at Muirfield. In the 2018 U.S. Open, Mickelson finished tied for 48th, forcing him to wait until next June to try to take home the U.S. Open Championship Trophy and with it, the career grand slam.
