Golf for Kids Kenya grows the game in Africa

Golf is surely a global game. That is certainly understood by many that know and love the sport. However, many do not realize how global golf is becoming. In general, most know golf, in a global sense, as something played in the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia and even in South Africa. Golf is something we usually do not associate with other parts of the world. So, to see the game starting to show some signs of life and interest in East, Central and North Africa is a very beautiful thing.

Two years ago, I had the pleasure to meet a trailblazer in the youth golf arena as he spreads his message of transforming lives through golf throughout Africa. I recently saw a very inspiring video on Facebook from this individual, Emanuel Kasio, that is, without question, a very moving example of what golf can do for kids globally.

5 questions for Emanuel Kasio, who runs Golf for Kids Kenya

PGA.com: When did "Golf for Kids Kenya" start?

Emanuel: Golf for Kids was established in 2012.

PGA.com: What are the challenges unique to doing this in Africa?

Emanuel: In the East Africa region, the common challenges include, but not limited to, the perception the game has, being that it is looked at as an elite (rich man’s) sport historically. Also, the general cost of junior equipment is high.

 

PGA.com: Who are the kids’ favorite golfers?

Emanuel: Tiger Woods.

 

PGA.com: How many kids are in the program?

Emanuel: Approximately 100 in the pay and play program and 500+ in the free community kids program.

 

PGA.com: What else should we know about your efforts?

Emanuel: I run a golf in school’s program to make it accessible, affordable and demystify the perception. I believe in seeking solutions and golf is a sport that can enhance education and self-esteem in many African communities. Golf is used as a teaching tool to instill life skills on kids and grow into good participating citizens of the world.

 

The idea of transforming the lives of youth through golf is something that Emanuel and I share and are very passionate about. The same can be said for countless golf professionals worldwide. As you watch the video below and consider the challenges that Emanuel certainly faces in his mission, you can not help but see the huge smiles on the faces of the kids and on the man at the helm of this inspirational program.
