Logan Watts makes hole-in-one, wins $25,000 at PGA Assistant Champ'ship

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – Logan Watts let out the “loudest yell” he ever has on a golf course Thursday, but it was for good reason.

The PGA apprentice at Louisville (Ky.) Country Club made his first competitive hole-in-one a shot to remember during the opening round of the 2013 National Car Rental PGA Assistant Championship presented by COBRA PUMA GOLF.

Watts, 24, aced the 214-yard par-3 17th, claiming a $25,000 National Car Rental Hole-In-One Challenge Grand Prize.

However, neither he nor his partners actually saw the 4-iron shot trickle into the hole.

“I hit it right on the screws,” said Watts. “As soon as I hit it I go ‘uh-oh boys, this one’s got a chance.’

“But the sun had started coming down so we couldn’t see the actual hole. I know landed just left of the hole and then kicked right of the hole. Then we couldn’t see anything after that. When we got up there and didn’t see it we thought it went off the back of the green. But oh no, it was in.”

Just moments before the hole-in-one, Watts and his playing partners were discussing what would happen if any of them aced the 17th hole and claimed the $25,000 prize.

“Right on the tee box we were talking about what we would do and I told them I might just withdraw and go home a happy camper with a smile on my face,” said Watts. “I won’t do that now.”

His initial thought after making the hole-in-one was simple – “I get to move out of my parent’s house,” he said. “I was shaking so bad that I had to walk all the way up to the next tee and back to collect myself.”

Watts also put himself in contention after a 69 in the opening round of the National Championship.

“I played solid today. I hit some bad shots out there, but luckily my putter was on my side,” said Watts. “The hot putter and a hole-in-one puts me in a good position heading into tomorrow.”
