Phil Mickelson commits to play Farmers Insurance Open

Despite having two hernia surgeries in two months, the second coming just two weeks ago, Phil Mickelson has officially committed to play in the Farmers Insurance Open which begins Jan. 26.

Mickelson first had surgery on his hernia in October, right after playing in the Safeway Open. His management company said in a statement after the second surgery that the five-time major champion is expected to make a full recovery, but it did not offer a timetable for his return.

That timetable appears to be shorter than many expected. Mickelson originally planned to open his 2017 schedule at the CareerBuilder Challenge on Jan. 19-22 in Palm Desert, California. It's still unknown if he will play in that tournament, but he is expected to attend as the event's ambassador.

Mickelson has won the Farmers Insurance Open in his hometown of San Diego three times, the last coming in 2001.
