Club Test 2011: Titleist Vokey Design Spin-Milled Wedges C-C

From Golf Magazine (May 2011)
Category: Wedges
We tested: 52°/8°, 56°/8°, 56°/11°, 56°/14°, 60°/4°, 60°/7°, 60°/10° with True Temper Dynamic Gold S200 steel shaft

Key Technologies: Tight tolerance grooves with maximum volume help provide optimal spin. The machined clubface has a rough surface, which allows you to maintain spin on touch shots around the green.

OUR TESTERS SAY: One of the highest-rated models in the test; tremendous playability, outstanding feel and classic look.

PROS
PLAYABILITY:
Stellar around the greens; ample spin, even with today's conforming grooves; easy to open wide for flop shots.

DISTANCE CONTROL: Excellent consistency on solidly struck shots in most situations; reliable on touch shots within 100 yards of the green.

FEEL: Provides a balanced sensation during the swing and at impact; not too firm and not too soft through the ball.
LOOK: Overall shape and grind are a big hit; matte satin finish reduces glare.

CONS
A handful of testers seek more forgiveness on full shots; shaft feels a bit stiff to a few guys.

From Golf Magazine (January 2010)
Designed in direct response to USGA and R&A rule changes, the Vokey Design Spin Milled C-C ("condition of competition") wedges feature lower-spinning grooves that conform to the new guidelines. The wedges (see "C-C" on hosel) will likely provide slightly higher trajectory on full shots and less stopping power from the rough than 2009 Vokey Spin Milled wedges. (The 2009 version is unchanged for 2010.)

From The Shop Blog (September 2009)
From the address position, the new Titleist Vokey Design Spin Milled C-C wedges appear virtually identical to the Spin Milled wedges that have been on the market for the past several seasons. But the new C-C models have been created to conform to the USGA's new grooves regulations. Hence the C-C, which stands for "Condition of Competition."

In 2010, Titleist plans to sell both the larger, sharper-grooved Spin Mill wedges that are currently available, as well as the new C-C version. Where the big-groove version features a red saw-blade design on the toe, the new C-C wedges have a gold saw blade and a "C-C" on the hosel.

Spin Milled C-C wedges will come with a sticker on the face that says, "This Vokey Design wedge conforms to the new 2010 USGA/R&A groove rule and can be used in events that adopt the new rule as a Condition of Competition."
