Defending Masters champ Sergio Garcia made a 13 on one hole in Round 1

Published on

When defending champion Sergio Garcia reached the par-5 15th tee in the first round of the Masters on Thursday, he was 2 over for the day.

When he walked off the 15th green, Garcia was 10 over.

That's right -- the dreaded "octuple-bogey" or 8-over par on a single hole.

Garcia was in a perfect spot in two shots, but -- from the middle of the fairway -- proceeded to spin not 1, not 2, but 5 balls off the green and back into the water.

When Garcia finally got his 12th shot to hold the green, he one-putted for a 13 -- tying the highest score on any hole in Masters history with Tom Weiskopf's 13 at No. 12 (1980) and Tommy Nakajima's 13 at No. 13 (1978).

The 13 also erased fellow Spaniard Ignacio Garrido's 11 on the 15th in 1998, as well as Ben Crenshaw's in 1997 and Jumbo Ozaki's in 1897 11s, as the highest score on that hole.

When Garcia won the Masters a year ago, he needed just 16 strokes to play the 15th hole over the four rounds.

Fittingly, Garcia birdied the par-3 16th -- an 11-shot swing from one hole to the next. And with pars at 17 and 18, he finished the day with a 9-over 81.
