David Price, PGA has a special relationship with 36-hole, PGA Championship leader Will Zalatoris, one that dates back close to 15 years.
Price was the longtime PGA Head Professional at Bent Tree Country Club in Dallas until his retirement four years ago. He started coaching Zalatoris at age 11 and worked with the 25-year-old Texan through his time in college at Wake Forest.
During that time together Zalatoris won a U.S. Junior Amateur title in 2014, was named ACC Player of the Year in 2017 and that same year was a member of the victorious U.S. Walker Cup team. Zalatoris left Wake Forest after his junior year to turn professional.
Price and Zalatoris remain close today. Zalatoris considers Price a friend and a mentor and the two visit when Zalatoris gets a chance to get over to Bent Tree.
Price is on the PGA Rules Committee and on Saturday at Southern Hills his duty is to manage the third, fourth and fifth holes in case any rules issues arise.
There are many special player-coach stories in golf. The Price-Zalatoris relationship is one to watch over the next two days because of Zalatoris’ position on the leaderboard.
