Dustin Johnson holes out for eagle, nearly does it again on next hole

With the U.S. Open coming up next week at Shinnecock Hills, Dustin Johnson is getting in his reps in Memphis this week at the FedEx St. Jude Classic.

 

If Friday's round is any indication, then it's pretty clear that the world's No. 2 ranked player is more than ready for the season's second major, which he won at Oakmont in 2016.

 

Johnson fired a 7-under 63 at TPC Southwind in the second round and that included an inward nine of 6-under 29.

Playing the back nine first, Johnson made the turn at 1 under for the day. 

 

But then, the fireworks started when he reached the tee on No. 1. 

 

Following a 308-yard tee shot, Johnson had 110 yards left to the hole. Once he got his yardage, he wasted no time pulling the trigger and did this: 

 

 

Boom. Eagle. Heck of a way to start your second nine.

 

But that wasn't it. On the very next hole, from 114 yards out, Johnson stuffed his approach to 9 inches:
 

 

He was "this close" to back-to-back eagles -- something J.B. Holmes accomplished on holes 2 and 3 on Friday with a hole out from 115 yards at 2 and an 8-foot putt on No. 3.

 

Johnson would also birdie the third hole and played his first three holes on the front in 4-under par.

 

With Friday's 63, Johnson moved to 10 under for the tournament and the early, Round 2 clubhouse lead.
