The 5 hardest holes at Shinnecock, so far, in the 2018 U.S. Open
Shinnecock Hills has been a monster during the 2018 U.S. Open. The scoring average after the first round was a brutal 76.48 on the par-70 course.
Tiger Woods is a combined 5-over on the first hole through two rounds.
Rory McIlroy shot 80 in Round 1 and was still 12 shots ahead of the man in last place, Scott Gregory.
Speaking of Rory, the super group of him, Phil Mickelson, and Jordan Spieth finished the first round a combined 25-over.
Still, some holes at Shinnecock Hills are playing more difficult than others.

Let’s break down the hardest ones, midway through the second round:
No. 3 — Par 4, 500 yards
Scoring average: +0.67
The second hardest hole is the second-longest par 4. No. 3 sits at 500 yards, and has seen the fewest birdies of any hole (7). The third has the highest percentage of below par scores of any hole so far.

No. 14 — Par 4, 519 yards
Scoring average: +0.64
No surprise here. The 14th is the longest par 4, and just 70 yards shorter than one of the two par 5s on the course. In fact, at 519 yards, it is 70 yards longer than the average of every other par 4 at Shinnecock. So yeah, there’s little room for error. Thursday, more than half of all scores on the hole were a bogey or worse. The 14th was also the host to the worst single-hole score Thursday, when Scott Stallings managed to reach the green in three, then six-putted for a nine.
No. 2 — Par 3, 252 yards
Scoring average: +0.5
The second hole is a rude awakening for most golfers. No. 1 has played fairly easily (unless you’re Tiger Woods), averaging just 0.18 strokes over par so far. But No. 2 is a brutal 0.5 strokes over, seeing more than half of scores as bogeys or worse. It is the only par 3 with more than half of its scores over par.
No. 10 — Par 4, 415 yards
Scoring average: +0.43
The 10th hole, which serves as the first for half of the golfers, is a fairly modest 415-yard par 4, and has actually seen 38 birdies, good for the fourth-most on a hole midway through Friday. But It has also doled out 126 bogeys or worse.
No. 12 — Par 4, 469 yards
Scoring average: +0.45
The 12th hole is in the middle of the roughest stretch on the course. The first six holes on the back nine include five of the eight hardest at Shinnecock, and the 469-yard par 4 12th is actually one of the easier. Still, it’s seen 128 bogeys or worse, compared to 162 pars.
