Tiger Woods’ history at Bethpage Black

Major championship golf returns to Bethpage State Park’s Black Course, one of the top-ranked public courses in the country, in May for the 101st playing of the PGA Championship.

Bethpage Black is a course that Tiger Woods has seen success on, as he captured a win at the 2002 U.S. Open and finished tied for sixth at the 2009 U.S. Open.

Overall, Woods has a scoring average of 70.17 through 12 tournament rounds played at the course, which also includes the 2012 Barclays.

Here's a look back at each tournament Woods has played at the famed course:

2002 U.S. Open

Out of the 156 golfers in the field that June, only one — Tiger Woods — finished under par during the 2002 U.S. Open, and it allowed him to capture his eighth major championship and second U.S. Open win.

Woods led wire-to-wire at Bethpage as Phil Mickelson finished runner-up for the second of a now record six times in his career at the U.S. Open.

It looked like Tiger might run away from the field during the final two rounds, but a 2-over round on Sunday brought him back to the pack and kept things close for other players to make a charge. However, despite two bogeys over the final three holes, his final putt on 18 still clinched the major win.

The win earned Tiger the first two legs of the grand slam, the first to do so since Jack Nicklaus in 1972.

2009 U.S. Open

Following up his legendary U.S. Open playoff win in 2008 at Torrey Pines, Tiger got off to a slow start in the heavy rain at Bethpage with an opening round 74.

That heavy rain throughout the week did not completely slow down Tiger as he battled back over the next three rounds to get back into contention.

He played the next three rounds under par and worked his way onto the first page of the final leaderboard when the tournament finally finished on Monday.

Lucas Glover won his first major with a win that week.

2012 The Barclays

The 2012 edition of The Barclays — now The Northern Trust — was the first PGA Tour event as part of the FedEx Cup to come to Bethpage.

Tiger got off to a strong start, but injured himself hitting an awkward shot during the second round that left him grabbing his left knee, which had been surgically repaired after the 2008 U.S. Open, and his lower back.

Tiger managed to fight his way through the remaining rounds, but the pain left him falling to his knees after one shot during Sunday's final round. He finished the tournament tied for 38th after posting a final-round 76.

2016 The Barclays

Tiger did not compete during the last PGA Tour event that was staged at Bethpage. He was recovering from a procedure on his back.
