10th Junior Ryder Cup highlight show debuts Nov. 9 on Golf Channel

Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. — The United States’ fifth straight victory over Europe in the 10th Junior Ryder Cup at Interlachen Country Club will be showcased on Golf Channel beginning Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 8 p.m. ET. Host Lisa Cornwell will recap the exciting 15 1/2 to 8 1/2 win by the Americans in September, with exclusive highlights and interviews.

Encore airings are scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 15, at 2 p.m. ET; and Wednesday, Nov. 23, at 4 p.m. ET.

The Junior Ryder Cup is a tradition that was inspired by an exhibition in 1995, between the Central New York PGA Section and Europe’s finest junior players, a group that featured a young Spaniard named Sergio Garcia. The Junior Ryder Cup has been the platform from which successful professional careers have been launched for several players including: Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy, Hunter Mahan, Nicolas Colsaerts, Tony Finau, Lexi Thompson, Suzann Pettersen and Garcia.

 

 

With nine of the 12 players on the U.S. team ranked among the Top 10 junior boys and girls in the world, the American squad built off a 7 to 5 lead amassed on Day 1 in foursomes and mixed four-ball, and were off to the races. It was an impressive performance by the U.S. Team, as they won the singles matches by a solid five points, 8 1/2 to 3 1/2.

U.S. Ryder Cup Captain Davis Love III, Spieth, McIlroy and Colsaerts are featured in the broadcast, as they met with the players from the teams in conjunction with a Friendship Match that was played a day after the conclusion of the Junior Ryder Cup at nearby Hazeltine National Golf Club, site of the 2016 Ryder Cup.

The Americans were led in the Junior Ryder Cup by Patrick Welch, 16, of Providence, Rhode Island and Wake Forest commit Emilia Migliaccio, of Cary, North Carolina. Both were undefeated at 3-0 on the week and were featured in Sports llustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd” for their performance.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I expect the team to be this good, not just in golf, but in the way they and the Europeans conducted themselves,” said U.S. Junior Ryder Cup Captain Jim Remy, the 36th President of the PGA of America.

Another top player on the team was 2016 Girls Junior PGA Champion Lucy Li , 13, of Redwood Shores, California, who was the youngest player in U.S. Women’s Open history, when she played in the event two years ago. Two University of Alabama commits Wilson Furr and Davis Shore are also prominently featured, as is 2016 Boys Junior PGA Champion Norman Xiong of Canyon Lake, Calif.

Eugene Hong, of Orlando, clinched the winning point on No. 18, as he sunk a five-foot par putt, to halve the hole, and a 1-up win over Matias Honkala, of Finland.

“One team won, and one team did not,” said Remy during the Closing Ceremony, as he accepted the Junior Ryder Cup Trophy from PGA President Derek Sprague. “Yet, golf won today. This was a tremendous championship.”

“Even though we lost, I’m still very proud of my team,” said European Junior Ryder Cup Captain Maitena Alsuguren. “I’m sure we will see many of them on the European Tour and the Ladies’ European Tour in the years to come, and I’m also sure we will come back strong in the 2018 Junior Ryder Cup.”

The 2018 Junior Ryder Cup will be held at Disneyland Golf near Paris, in conjunction with the 42nd Ryder Cup.
