These notable events took place at Kemper Lakes Golf Course

The KPMG Women's PGA Championship begins Thursday at Kemper Lakes Golf Club in Kildeer, Ill., where the field will compete for one of the LPGA's five majors on the 6,741-yard course in Chicago's suburbs. Kemper Lakes has been home to numerous PGA, LPGA, senior and amateur golf events through the years.

Here are the most notable events.

1989 PGA Championship

Payne Stewart won his fifth PGA Tour event and first major when he finished one stroke ahead of Mike Reid, Andy Bean and Curtis Strange in the 71st PGA Championship at Kemper Lakes. After shooting an opening-round 74, Stewart shot a 66, 69 and 67 to finish 12-under for the week.

The PGA Championship victory was part of five-wins-in-three-years stretch on the PGA Tour that also included a win in the 1991 U.S. Open after a playoff with Scott Simpson.

1992 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship

The 92nd U.S. Women's Amateur Championship saw Vicki Goetze defeat Annika Sorenstam for her second amateur title in four years after she won the 1989 championship. Despite winning 10 LPGA majors and more than 70 LPGA Tour events, Sorenstam turned pro later in 1992, making U.S. Women's Amateur Champion one of the elusive titles she never held.

Goetze, meanwhile, was unable to replicate her illustrious junior and amateur golf career on the LPGA Tour. Her best finish in a major was sixth in the Women's British Open in 2003.

PGA Grand Slam of Golf

Kemper Lakes hosted the now-defunct PGA Grand Slam of Golf four times – 1986, 1988, 1989 and 1990. The event brought together the winners of each of the PGA's four majors for a fun, offseason tournament.

Some of the biggest names in professional golf from the 1980s and '90s participated in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf at Kemper Lakes, such as Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Curtis Strange, Payne Stewart and Andy North.

Norman won in 1986, his first of three PGA Grand Slam of Golf titles – the second-most only to Tiger Woods.

Larry Nelson was victorious in 1988, followed by Strange and North, respectively, in the following years.

The event was held for the final time in 2014, when U.S. Open winner Martin Kaymer won the PGA Grand Slam of Golf.

Ameritech/SBC Senior Open

The SBC Senior Open – formerly called the Ameritech Senior Open – was held at Kemper Lakes Golf Club in six consecutive years, including an impressive run in the late '90s when Hale Irwin finished as the runner-up in 1997, then won the event the next two years.

The event was last held in 2002 at Chicago's Harborside International Golf Center, concluding a 12-year run in which the tournament was held in the greater Chicagoland area. Irwin won the event three times, while no other golfer won it more than once.
