Schuller-Delmar, Lowe-Schmuhl Lead PGA Senior-Junior Team Championship

PORT ST. LUCIE – Rick Schuller either knows how to pick a partner or play well in team competition.

His name always seems to be on the leaderboard of the Senior-Junior Team Championship, a PGA Winter Championship event at PGA Golf Club.

Playing with Steven Delmar this year, Schuller and Delmar combined for a 3-under 69 on the Ryder Course Monday to share the lead at 11-under 133 after 36 holes in the event that pairs players 49 and younger with someone 50 or older.

“Rick really played well on the front nine,” said Delmar, an assistant coach on the Maryland men’s golf team. “We were 1-over after seven holes and he made a long birdie at 8 and a great par at 9. We kind of righted the ship after that.”

Schuller teamed with Bob Sowards to win the event in 2013, finishing T2 last year, T4 in 2016 and sixth in 2014.

Schuller and Delmar are tied with Mitch Lowe and Jason Schmuhl. The Californians shot a bogey-free 66 on the Ryder Course.

Tied for third place at 9-under 135 is the team of Darrell Kestner (69), the reigning PGA Golf Professional of the Year, and Sean Quinlivan of Huntington, N.Y., and Gary Robison (68) of Canton, Ohio and Dennis Miller of Youngstown, Ohio.

Alone in fifth place at 137 is Daniel Callahan (68) and Ted Kimmel of Chaska, Minn. The defending champions, Mark Brown and Matt Dobyns, are tied for 19th after a 71.

There will be a cut to low 40 teams and ties after 54 holes so each team will have played a round over the Dye, Ryder and Wanamaker courses. The projected cut is -3 or 4-under.
