PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (Dec. 14, 2015) – Rod Perry needed a break.
The two-time PGA Professional Player of the Year wasn't happy with his game, so he put the clubs away for the weekend.
The two-day timeout helped his game Monday as he fired a 7-under 65 to take a three-shot lead after the first round of Event No. 5 of the PGA Tournament Series at PGA Golf Club.
"I came out refreshed and with a better attitude," said Perry, the PGA Head Professional at Crane Lakes Golf and Country Club in Port Orange, Fla. "I hit a lot of greens, but it always comes down to making those 10- or 15-footers when you have the opportunity."
Perry made eight birdies and a bogey on the Dye Course. He leads by three over Mark Mielke (68) of Palm Beach Gardens. Mielke didn't make a bogey.
"I didn't feel like it played that tough," said Mielke, who won his lone PGA Tournament Series event more than 20 years ago. "When you're hitting it good and not having to get up and down, it seems easy to you."
Tied for third place at 69 are Rich Berberian of Derry, N.H., Ben Engle of Indianapolis, Adam Kolloff of Hoboken, N.J., and Matt Shepherd of Nantucket, Mass.
The PGA Tournament Series is sponsored by Golf Advisor.
