So Yeon Ryu's consecutive made cut streak ends at 64

GALLOWAY, N.J. -- After coming close last week to missing her first cut in an LPGA Tour event in three years, So Yeon Ryu felt she had corrected the minor flaws in her game and could contend at this week's ShopRite LPGA Classic.

But things did not go well for her on the Bay Course at the Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club, and Ryu, saw her streak of consecutive made cuts end at 64 on Saturday when she shot her second straight 3-over-par 74.

Ryu, 26, of South Korea, carded 148 for 36 holes, missing the cut by three. The missed cut also meant she would not advance to the No. 1 world ranking from her current No. 3; she needed a top-three finish here to do that.

"Just everything was going wrong," she said. "Sometimes I was really unlucky because of one yard. Even though I would hit a really great shot, the ball would keep rolling and finish in the fescue. I was hoping I would play better, but I couldn't. Hopefully I can bring out my A-game later."

The last time Ryu did not complete a tournament was the 2014 Evian Masters, where she was disqualified after the first round. She had not missed a 36-hole cut since the 2014 ShopRite LPGA.

An LPGA spokesman said the official count began after the Evian Masters.

Asked about the end of the streak, Ryu said she never really thought about it.

"I always think about how I'm going to finish strong to win the tournament," she said. "I always look for a higher level instead of just make a cut. I think that's helped me to make a lot of cuts. At the same time, I was very fortunate as well. If I play bad or great, I always enjoy playing golf."

And as for being No. 1, she replied, "I'm going to have a week off next week. I just need to regroup, and then I'll be OK after that."

Checking the numbers

With Ryu's streak ended, Stacy Lewis becomes the tour's active leader in consecutive cuts made, with 49, including this event.

Now that Ryu has missed the cut, Ariya Jutanugarn will move up to No. 1 in the world, supplanting Lydia Ko, who has held the spot for 84 consecutive weeks. Neither Jutanugarn nor Ko competed here.

Hall members make cut

The field of 144 players was reduced to 76 following the 36-hole cut. The four members of the LPGA Hall of Fame who are in the field this week all advanced to Sunday play: Karrie Webb (68-138), Inbee Park (70-138), Laura Davies (71-140) and Juli Inkster (73-144).
