Amy Yang leads after rainy first round of KPMG Women's PGA Championship

Amy Yang recorded an opening-round 6-under 65, good for a one-stroke lead over Chella Choi (66) after the first round of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Olympia Fields (Ill.) Country Club. The No. 9 player in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings, Yang holed out from 192 yards to record the lone eagle of the day on the North Course’s 377-yard 2nd hole. The 27-year-old Yang is in search of her first career major championship victory this week at Olympia Fields. She has three career LPGA victories, but remains in search of her first title in the United States. Yang won the Honda LPGA Thailand in February and is coming off a strong performance in last week’s Walmart NW Arkansas Championship presented by P&G, where she finished in a tie for second place.

Late rains on Thursday prompted the suspension play at 7:01 p.m., as 30 players, including Yang, were not able to complete their opening rounds. Olympia Fields took on 0.28” of rain overnight. Yang resumed her opening round this morning at 7:45 a.m. and proceeded to birdie the par-5 18th hole to thrust her to the top of the leaderboard.
