Original 1904 Olympic medals to shine at World Golf Hall of Fame

 

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Two Summer Olympics medals won by H. Chandler Egan in 1904, the last time golf was part of the Olympic schedule, will be showcased next month at the World Golf Hall of Fame.

 

The Hall of Fame joins the United States Golf Association to display the medals as golf makes its return to the Summer Olympic Games in August in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Amy Alcott, 1999 World Golf Hall of Fame inductee and co-designer of the Olympic golf course in Rio, will attend the grand opening and medal unveiling set for 6:00 p.m. Thursday, June 23, at the World Golf Hall of Fame at One World Golf Place.

 

Egan's medals represent his achievements in the individual and team competitions at the 1904 Olympics. He also won the silver medal in the individual competition. In addition to the Olympic medals, the exhibit will present Egan's golf career, including back-to-back U.S. Amateur Championship victories in 1904 and 1905.

 

The medals are on loan from Egan's grandson, Morris Everett Jr., and will be on display through the end of the year.

 

The Olympic men's golf competition is scheduled for Thursday through Sunday, Aug. 11 to 14 in Rio, while the women's competition is scheduled for Wednesday through Sunday, Aug. 17-20,
