How much is Jordan Spieth's utility iron worth?
Published on
Jordan Spieth made a little bit of history on Sunday by becoming only the sixth player to win the first two majors of the season when he added the U.S. Open to the Masters crown he captured in April. He also became the first player since Gene Sarazen in 1922 to win two different majors before the age of 22.
As he explained earlier this year, Spieth is very deliberate when it comes to adding – or replacing – clubs in his bag. Yet he made one switch in his Masters-winning bag to help him meet the challenges of Chambers Bay – removing a 20.5-degree Titleist 915H hybrid and replacing it with a Titleist 712U 3-iron.
The 712U utility irons are available in an 18-degree 2-iron, a 21-degree 3-iron and a 24-degree 4-iron. All three clubs are forged from 1025 stainless steel and include a high-speed 455 steel face insert. They have a traditional profile with a rounded back design that many better players prefer over cavityback long irons with more offset.
Titleist showed the 712U irons – there are 2-, 3- and 4-iron versions – to its pro tour players in the summer of 2012, and they made their debut at retail in 2013 with a $235 per club. They currently have an estimated trade-in value of $41.25 and an estimated resale value of $82.50, according to the PGA.com Value Guide and Trade-in Network.
