A Quick Nine: The best Texas courses for every golfer

Every now and again, we like to call on our friends in certain states -- or friends who have visited those certain states -- to help us find the best golf courses available to the public.

This time around, the spotlight is on Texas, the Lone Star State and the largest of the 48 contiguous United States. Don't worry; we realize everything is bigger in Texas -- including its place in the annals of golf history.

9. Brackenbridge Park Golf Course, San Antonio, Texas. Brackenridge Park Golf Course is the oldest public golf course in Texas and the first ever host to the Texas Open Golf Tournament in 1922. This historic golf course has the honor of being the first inductee into the Texas Golf Hall of Fame. A round of golf at Brackenbridge can be had for less than $50.

8. Barton Creek Resort & Spa, Fazio Foothills in Austin, Texas. According to its website:

7. Wildcat Golf Club in Houston, Texas. A favorite amongst local professional athletes, Wildcat features two courses -- the Highlands and the Lakes -- and provides incredible panoramic views of the city.

6. Old American Golf Club in The Colony, Texas. Co-designed by Justin Leonard and Tripp Davis, the course sits along the shores of Lake Lewisville. Not surprisingly -- seeing as Leonard is one of the designers -- this is truly a strategic, shot-maker's course.

5. Tour 18 in Humble, Texas. Very interesting place here, folks. The people at Tour 18 have reproduced the most renowned holes in golf for its course. The incredible attention to detail allows you to play holes you could only dream of playing otherwise -- Nos. 11, 12 and 13, Amen Corner, at Augusta National; No. 17 at Sawgrass; No. 3 at Oakmont; No. 8 at Shinnecock Hills; etc. Awesome concept.

4. The Rawls Course at Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas. Recent accolades for The Rawls Course: Golfweek's No. 2 Best Course that you can play in Texas for 2012; Golfweek's No. 3 University Golf Course in America; and Golf Digest's No. 2 New Affordable Public Golf Course in the U.S. Those seem like three good reasons to play.

3. Texas Star Golf Course in Euless, Texas. This from the description on its website: "Texas Star is well-known for world-class golf that is secluded in the midst of the bustling Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. This challenging course has been highly ranked by Golf Digest, Golfweek, the Dallas Morning News and T&L Golf. This serene public golf course has a private feel with 275 acres of plush fairways, magnificent views, stacked rock ponds, waterfalls and natural woodlands."

2. Diamondback Golf Club in Abilene, Texas. Built and operated by 1971 Masters Champion Charles Coody, this West Texas course opened in 1999. When we looked at Diamondback's website, we saw tee times available for as little as $18 per player -- that's $1 per hole!

1. The Golf Club at Fossil Creek in Fort Worth, Texas. How about this for a deal? On Fridays -- Pro V1 Fridays -- you can play The Golf Club at Fossil Creek for $79 plus tax. That price includes: greens fee, cart fee, GPS, range balls and one dozen Titleist Pro V1 golf balls. That's one heck of a bargain.
