73-year-old realtor records two aces in one round

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Margery Hadar, who began playing golf three years ago, made the most of a Sunday round at Granada Golf Course by recording two holes-in-one.

The 73-year-old New York resident, using a driver that she called, “the best club in my bag,” holed out on the 164-yard No. 5 hole and nearly 30 minutes later on the 112-yard No. 7 hole. The 1923 Donald Ross layout is touted as South Florida’s oldest continuous operated par-3 course.

“It’s very exciting to have a hole-in-one, but to do it twice is something nobody else would believe,” said Hadar, a real estate broker for Brown, Harris, Stevens in New York, and who spends part of the year in Key Biscayne. “I used a driver on both holes, which I know sounds unbelievable. But, the seventh hole was uphill, and I felt I should throw caution to the wind. We thought the ball flew the green. We walked up looking and there it was in the hole.” 

Witnessing Hadar’s big day on the course were playing partners Bonnie Green of Coconut Grove, Fla.; and Steven Fleischer of New York. One group behind and who also witnessed both aces, were Hadar’s friends, Nancy Gelles of Coconut Grove and Nancy Hodes of Albany, N.Y.

Hadar, who last measured her handicap last year at “above-30,” said that she is a women’s league member at Sag Harbor (N.Y.) Golf Club.

“There wasn’t a bar in the clubhouse, otherwise I’m sure that I would have been obligated to pick up the tab,” joked Hadar. “My dad (the late Mike Rubin of Lancaster, Pa.) was a great golfer and had one hole-in-one. He would have been so happy to see me do this.

“It’s these kind of moments that make you come back to play more.”
