Local Knowledge: An inside look at Muirfield Village

By Josh Cagliani- PGA.com

May 28, 2008 -- When your course and tournament represent one of the most iconic names in all of sports, the expectation is to be the best on all levels. That is exactly what Larry Dornisch, the PGA Head Professional of Muirfield Village Golf Club, home of The Memorial Tournament presented by Morgan Stanley, delivers on all accounts as he tells PGA.com.

PGA.com: This course was designed from the dreams of Jack Nicklaus who wanted another tournament with the same atmosphere and respect as the Masters. You are able to consistently draw in the best players in the world every year. What makes the players want to keep returning to this tournament?

Dornisch: First of all, it is one of the most beautiful courses in the world. When the players come to the Memorial they get excellent treatment, they are fed well and they are treated great by the tournament staff. The fans in the area are extremely knowledgeable about the golf, and that makes it a great experience for the players, not to mention it is Jack's home.

PGA.com: The course wouldn't be there if it wasn't for Jack Nicklaus. What does he mean to the community and this golf course?

Dornisch: He's everything. As you know this tournament wouldn't be what it is today without Jack. He makes everything go. It was his dream to create this golf course, so everything revolves around that dream in wanting this to be the best golf course and tournament in the world. The community and everyone involved with the course admire Jack and his ambitions for this course.

PGA.com: Even though everyone thinks of Nicklaus when they think of this golf tournament, does he actually help in running the tournament?

Dornisch: He's involved in the process of working with the tournament. He helps a lot. Jack doesn't just show up, he works hard to make sure everyone enjoys the tournament. His sons are also involved in the tournament as well. They are all readily available and willing to help whenever they are needed.

PGA.com: I saw where the field size has been changed from 105 players to 120 players for this year's tournament. Whose decision was that and will that affect the tournament in any way?

Dornisch: It was a request from the PGA Tour. A lot of players were looking for more access to tournaments to play in. The PGA Tour asked us to expand the field and we accommodated them. The only difference in the tournament will be on Thursday and Friday when we will be using the front and back nine to tee off from. Other than that it will not be affected much.

PGA.com: For someone coming to the course for the first time, what would you tell them to expect from the course and what is essential for success on this course?

Dornisch: First of all, you must stay out of the rough if you want to play well. This is a difficult course without finding yourself in the rough. Then there are our furrow bunkers which are very tough to get out of. However, the ultimate key to having a successful round of golf at Muirfield Village is hitting a good second shot. A good second shot will leave you with a chance for par. If you miss the green your chances of par decrease drastically.
